What GABA does in the body
GABA is a chemical messenger that helps reduce nerve-cell activity. It is often described as part of the nervous system’s braking system because it helps balance more activating signals.
That biology is well established for GABA made and used inside the body. It does not automatically tell us what happens after GABA is swallowed as a supplement.
Can oral GABA reach the brain?
The blood-brain barrier carefully controls what moves from the bloodstream into brain tissue. Current human evidence does not show that a typical oral dose of GABA crosses that barrier in a meaningful amount.
A benefit would not necessarily require direct entry into the brain. Researchers have proposed signals through the digestive system, nerves, or other tissues, but those routes remain possible explanations rather than settled proof.
