Before the details
- A mechanism explains how something might work; it does not prove that it helps people.
- The finished product, dose, formulation, population, and outcome should resemble what was actually studied.
- Several consistent, well-run studies are usually more informative than one exciting result.
- Evidence of benefit and evidence of safety are separate questions.
Start with the exact question
A useful question names the ingredient or device, the amount or exposure, the people using it, the outcome, and the time period.
A product can contain a researched ingredient without the finished blend itself having been tested. Evidence should not silently transfer between different doses, forms, combinations, or devices.
Why study design matters
Laboratory and animal studies can reveal mechanisms. Observational studies can find patterns. Randomized trials are better suited to testing whether an intervention caused an outcome, while systematic reviews compare the full body of relevant work.
None of these labels guarantees quality. Small samples, short follow-up, weak comparison groups, selective reporting, and conflicts of interest can all make a result less certain.
Read confidence, not just direction
A positive result can still be uncertain. Evidence grading considers study limitations, consistency, precision, directness, and publication bias.
Promising means there is a signal worth studying, not that a benefit is established. Mixed means credible findings point in different directions or depend heavily on the population or outcome.
Safety deserves its own evidence
Natural does not mean risk-free. Dose, kidney or liver function, pregnancy, allergies, and medicine interactions can change the risk.
